Sonoma State may not have a football team, but the spirit remains and the Student Alumni Ambassadors are trying to resurface it. Midnight Madness, a long running SSU tradition is reinventing itself to bring more attention to athletics, and the school itself.
McKenna Wilson is spearheading the event and turning it into a "giant pep rally" to put a face on the athletes competing for the Seawolves.
"We want to get more people to come out to the games and support the teams," said Wilson.
On Fri., Oct. 15 from 9:30 p.m. to midnight in the Wolves' Den, students will have the opportunity to win free prizes by joining their fellow classmates for a night of food, games, and fun. For just $6, students can participate in a slam-dunk contest, a half court shot, and a t-shirt slinging contest, as well as learning more about the sports SSU has to offer. The first 100 students in the door will also receive a coupon for a free In-N-Out burger
Midnight Madness will conclude ASI's Homecoming Week, and the winner of the homecoming contest between campus clubs will be announced. The dance and cheer teams will also put on performances.
The theme this year is "Sonoma Gear" and students are encouraged to wear as much SSU apparel as they can; those who do will earn prizes.
Costs to host the event are funded by the Student Alumni Ambassadors, who receive donations from alumni to sponsor campus activities. The money raised will go back to the students; half will be set aside specifically for the teams so that they can purchase uniforms, equipment or anything else they might need for the season.
"Our goal is to double the money we raised last year," said Wilson. All members of the SSU community are welcome to attend.
