Uncontrollable laughter, long-lasting smiles, and positive attitudes are signature characteristics of the Improv Club at Sonoma State.
Capable of provoking contagious smirks and rupturing an innocent chuckle into a steady flow of joyful tears, the club specializes in genuine entertainment.
"I couldn't contain myself, I was dying of laughter. These people are so creative," said Junior Crystal Nicklas.
This comical group of talented, light hearted and energetic individuals know how to have a good time while providing a comfortable and enjoyable setting for all.
"This club is bad ass. Being in the Improv club is the most fun I've ever had on campus and I'm going to say that legally" said Josh Argyle.
Never a dull moment is spent with this group of people, as their main goal is to heighten good spirits and most importantly, laugh hysterically while dishing out jokes constantly.
"It's a blast being around people who are just always in a great mood," said Argyle.
Members of the Improv Club meet every Wednesday and Friday night in Ives 76 to practice and exercise their humorous talents with different types of games, spot character work, pantomime, and of course anything worthy of capturing a grin-they whole heartedly invest their time in.
"I really look forward to those two hours of being around really cool people and just laughing non stop," said Argyle.
This encouraging, warm atmosphere does more than just crack a smile; it also serves as an immaculate stress reliever.
"It's a great way to blow off steam," said Argyle.
Winding down from countless hours spent hitting the books, or restlessly conducting a long day in the workplace, the Improv club is a stable place to both release and restore energy.
"Everyone should join," said Argyle.
The club is open to all interested students, there are completely no limitations, except for a willingness to have fun and be yourself.
"I'm pretty much just a big goof, and this club is so great for me because I don't have to worry about being the weird guy, everyone's just as weird as me. We're all weird together, and I LOVE IT," said Argyle.
With a dose of laughter, a mixture of laid back personalities, and a shared desire to enjoy life, the members of this club find this environment to be the ultimate escape from the exhaustion everyday life entails.
This has been "A year of aggressive expansion" according to Trevor Reece.
With the number of members rapidly doubling in size this semester, awareness of this once low key club, has increased significantly.
"Out of nowhere, the club just lit on fire" said Reece.
The Improv club hosts performances throughout the year for the entire student body, and this semester attendance levels have skyrocketed.
"Along with a spectacular performance at the annual Big Night kickoff event, the club hosted a midnight performance last Friday with both shows packed to the maximum capacity.
"It was so crowded," said Nicklas. "The place was packed with people. I had to stand in the back and I was there a half an hour early."
Performances typically run an hour to an hour and a half, and always rely on participation from the audience.
"We like to have the audience involved, yelling and shouting out suggestions," said Argyle.
Interaction is key for these individuals to effectively exhibit their humorous traits, and thus far the SSU student body has been extremely supportive.
"It's a friggin' good time for free," said Nicklas.
An on campus event that is beneficial to the social life and easy on the wallet is an intriguing concept that appeals to most college students.
Though acting in front of a large group of strangers may be a daunting endeavor, overcoming the initial stage fright is a process worthwhile.
"It was weird at first. After you get over that initial weirdness of being on stage, it's something to look forward to," said Argyle. "It reminds me of the kind of rush I get in football right before the kickoff, you can't beat it."
The Improv club is always looking for individuals to share in their passion for comedy
"You go to one show, and I guarantee you'll be hooked" said Argyle.
Upcoming shows will take place Sept. 26 and Oct. 10 at midnight in Ives 76 and their "Big Show" will occur Oct. 30 in the Cooperage.
Share in the laughter, and let your inner child loose.
