Coming back to school after a leisurely vacation is probably the least exciting time of the year. But instead of barricading yourself in the dorms for the duration of this raining season, check out a few events offered throughout the next few weeks.
ASP and The Scene Presents: "The Norman Magic Experience"
Sonoma State introduces renowned magician Norman Ng for a night of stunts, illusions and pure entertainment for "The Norman Magic Experience." A few lucky audience members will even get the chance to share the stage for some of the Great Norman's amazing acts. Watching as audience members get the chance to win cash prizes and even read each other's minds. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Ives 101. Free. 8 p.m.
Big Screen Movie Night Featuring "Midnight in Paris"
Some of the most noteworthy names in the biz come together with the illustrious Woody Allen for the quirky movie "Midnight in Paris." The film centers around Gil Pender, an aspiring novelist who finds himself transported back to the 1920s. During his time travels he encounters Cole Porter, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Earnest Hemmingway, as well as Gertrude Stein, to whom he tries to pitch his latest novel. Come watch the perfectly casted actors, including Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, in action for "Big Screen Movie Night." Saturday, Jan.28 at Ives 101. 9 p.m. Free for SSU students.
WGS Queer Lecture Series
All you need is love, right? Mildred Gerestant, aka light, aka Dred, a self-love educator and diversity consultant shares her vast understanding and involvement in the LGBTQQI community with Sonoma State students. This Haitian-American actress, known for her thought-provoking and real-to-life one-woman shows, expresses why love, not judgment, is the ultimate answer. Thursday, Feb. 2 at Stevenson 1002. Noon. Free for SSU students.
"I am Always the One I Wanted to Marry"
Mildred Gerestant explores the dichotomy that exists between the ideas that constitute homosexuality versus heterosexuality, while dissecting the realm of sexuality and gender. Gerestrant channels her male persona, Dred, as well as her attitudes towards those carrying various sexual identities. Through poetry, movement, comedy and music, she has rewritten the notions of sexual identity and the spiritual self. Check out this modern day spiritual healer. Thursday, Feb. 2 at Ives 101. 7 p.m. Free to SSU students.
Res Life Get A Way - San Jose Sharks
Coming back to the grind of text books and exams after a relaxing break is a complete drag, especially when there is absolutely nothing to do. Come take a trip with SSU Res Life for a get away to the frigid San Jose Sharks' stomping ground. The Sharks face off against the Dallas Stars for a game that is sure to encounter a few good old fashioned, player-induced fist fights. Break out your ear muffs and gloves to see the game live. Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Sharks Stadium. 4:30 p.m. $33-$38. Stop at the Res Life office between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily to sign up.
The Sonoma Film Institute Presents: "The Light Thief"
The Sonoma Film Institute features a tale of good versus evil in the endearing movie "The Light Thief." In the midst of fulfilling a dream to spread wind-generated electricity to his impoverished village, the humble electrician turned visionary Aktan Arym Kubat finds himself in the face of growing big corporation corruption. This submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 83rd Academy Awards comes to SSU. Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. in Ives Hall. Free for SSU students. 707.664.2606.
