After interviews with all three candidates and careful contemplation of the issues facing the university, the Sonoma State STAR has reached the conclusion that Bridgette Dussan is the most qualified candidate for ASI President for the 2010- 2011 school year. In her interview and in her leadership history, Dussan has demonstrated her ability to recognize the needs of her constituents and a great capacity for empathizing with students, even those whose college experience is vastly different from her own. Ultimately, the STAR editorial board felt that Dussan would be the approachable student leader of the candidates, and, therefore, the best equipped to dialogue with and advocate for the student body.
Though all candidates presented thoughtful, compelling platforms, the STAR editorial board felt that Dussan would be the most effective at accomplishing the goals she outlined, which included increasing the accessibility of ASI meetings to students, promoting campus initiatives to connect graduating seniors with employers and working with non-profits and foundations to help compensate for deficits in state funding.
Her impressive resume of leadership experience, particularly her experience working directly with state legislators, seemed to be a critical point at a time when state politics are so closely tied to student experience at SSU.
However, as an addendum, the STAR editorial board felt that Sean Richards exhibited a great deal of potential and admired his firm stance on fiscal oversight on campus. The STAR hopes to see him run as a presidential candidate for 2011- 2012, with another year of campus leadership experience under his belt.
