You're finally talking to that hottie you've been checking out all night. All of sudden there's a pounding at the door and surprise— it's the cops. Now you have to go home and it's only 10:30 p.m.
Welcome to the "60 day," also known as the party ordinance.
Throughout Rohnert Park, it has become standard for house parties to get broken up before 11 p.m. and the residents to receive a 60 day noise ordinance.
However, not only are college parties getting broken up, but small get-togethers are as well. Even a small gathering of friends can attract the Rohnert Park police to break up the fun.
"When we got a 60 day, the cops were angry because they had already been to our house twice, so they automatically gave us one," said senior Lauren Hopson. "However, we only had four to five people over."
Having just as few as five people over has proven that the Rohnert Park police take noise ordinances very seriously. This brings up the controversy of whether neighbors are genuinely concerned or just party poopers.
With just one call, the police can be on their way to issue the tenants a 60 day. Neighbors or even a single person at the party can phone in and complain about the gathering.
"As a college student, the social atmosphere is very important to the college experience. I do not disagree with neighbors calling the cops— it's just unfortunate that there is no way to be social with your peers and not create a noise disturbance," said sophomore Ari Forer.
Typically students have a harder time finding a landlord that will lease their house to young adults.
The reputation of college students throwing parties has discouraged landowners from renting to this age group.
"I recently looked at a house in M Section and the landlord threatened that he would immediately evict us if we had a party," said sophomore Alyssa Inghram. "He said that the gardener would be able to tell him if there had been any large gatherings."
