"Ignorant" letter angers student
Issue date: 10/7/08 Section: Letters to the Editor
[In response to "Vote NO on Prop 8," Issue 5] While I believe that everybody has a right to their own opinion, and the right to express it, I do not believe that it should be done as it was here.
This article reeks of ignorance and bigotry. Much of the article is spent belittling the people who would vote Yes on Prop 8, not to mention that one of the most condescending phrases is emphasized as the center piece of the article!!
On top of this, the article states that Mormons practice polygamy. This is a blatantly false statement uttered by someone who is not only ignorant of the beliefs of the members of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but is also not intelligent enough to investigate rumors to validate their truth! What is most frightening about this is that the article is written by a member of the faculty!
This presents an image of the paper and the school as being composed of ignorant, unintelligent, close-minded people who care nothing for truth.
Somehow I doubt that this is the image the STAR or Sonoma State University wishes to portray.
I propose that the editor should review articles with greater scrutiny and weed out those that contain inappropriate and incorrect information.
As I understand it, this is already the job of the editor.
