The SSU men's soccer team went 1-1 last week on the road against UC San Diego and CSU Dominguez Hills and are now 9-2-2 (4-1-2 CCAA) for the year.

The Seawolves, who were ranked sixth in last week's national poll, took on number 5 UCSD last Friday, and beat the Tritons 4-0.

The scoring didn't kick in for the team until the second half and then SSU continued to dominate the field.

The first goal came from forward Ben Langwith off a pass from the left corner to the center box from senior forward Mark Wiedeman in the 69th minute and then was soon followed by a repeat from Langwith off another assist from Wiedeman in the 71st minute, putting the score at 2-0. Wiedeman's assist was on another centering pass from the left side.

The Seawolves third goal came from senior forward Nathan Medina off a pass by forward Cam Vickers and another cross from Wiedeman in the 77th minute, and the final goal of the game was in the last minute of play by junior forward Alan Grady, with freshman midfielder Davide Furtado being credited for an assist. Goalie Brook Johnson had three saves for the night.

With three assists against the Tritons, Wiedeman set an all-time record for assists in a game by a Seawolf men's soccer player, and with the win, SSU extended its winning streak to six games.

"We played our game in the first half and just couldn't put in a goal," said Grady.

"But as soon as we scored that first one, we knew they couldn't stop us."

On Sunday the Seawolves took on the no. 14 ranked Toros of CSU Dominguez Hills but couldn't come away with a win after a defensive struggle ended in a 1-0 defeat.

The Toros one goal came in the 83rd minute when Greg Piechota got a feed from Marco Pulido and blasted a shot from 15-yards out that brushed off Johnson's fingertips on its way to the upper end of the net.

The Seawolves best chance to score came on a strike from Langwith after he made it past the Toro's defense in the 35th minute but was denied on a one-handed diving save from goalkeeper Miguel Benitez.

"He didn't have the greatest angle but he still hit it really well," said Grady. "Unfortunately for us, their keeper made a great save."

In total SSU had nine shots in the game compared to 17 by the Toros, and Johnson made six saves, a season-high, while Benitez made four. SSU had four corner kicks compared to CSUDH's three, and nine fouls compared to the Toros' eight, including yellow cards drawn by Langwith and SSU defender Stuart Gallant.

"We obviously wanted to come away from the road trip with two wins," Grady said. "We only get to play the SoCal teams once so we always want those victories."

The Seawolves record moves to 9-2-2 and are one game behind Chico State for first place in the CCAA North Division with eight regular season games remaining.
