Here at SSU it is as easy to find as the University Library.
Melanie Kent Steinhardt (1899- 1952), an "aspiring Bohemian Jewish artist," exhibit is now open, through March 24.
Steinhardt left her home in Europe in 1939 and eventually settled in California in 1941. It was in Inglewood where amongst the "burgeoning military industrial complex," that she found inspiration for most of her work.
Her artwork has been described as pieces that are "diverse and compelling... blend European Expressionism with an émigré's troubled impressions of two World Wars, a woman's place in a male dominated world, and her new life in America."
Steinhardt died in her Los Angeles studio at the age of 52. It is still unclear today if it was by accident or suicide.
This Friday, Feb. 10, in the University Library Art Gallery, a public reception will be held from 5:30-8:30pm.
Richard Hill, Steinhardt's grandson, will speak at 7pm about his grandmother and her legacy.
