It's the start of a new semester and that means that it's time, whether you are a new or returning student, to get involved in a club here at SSU. SSU has over 100 clubs and organizations that cater to each student's academic or interests needs.

So why join a club? What are the benefits?  Heather Howard, director of Office of Campus Life & Leadership here at SSU said, "Involvement outside the classroom is key to the 'whole' experience of a student while in college. Taking advantage of the diverse leadership opportunities available to students is just one of the many ways to expand learning. Joining a club/organization, sitting on a campus committee, serving as a TA, running for an elected office, attending a lecture or workshop are just some of the many and rich opportunities available to students."

Kate Kennedy, a junior, has been involved in a sorority since her freshman year. "Since then I have made some of my lifetime friends. I recommend getting involved because the experiences and people you meet will enhance your college career, and forever change your life," she said.

The Office of Campus Life (OCL) encourages students to take advantage of the support and resources available to chartered student organizations; OCL assists students with the planning and implementation of a wide variety of educational, social and cultural programs and activities. OCL also provides support advising on organizational issues, such as membership recruitment, fundraising, running effective meetings, managing conflicts, and program planning, to name only name a few.

"Think about what your interests might be, how you might like to expand your horizons, meet new people... Check out the club directory or come into OCL and we can help to connect you to a club that may meet your needs. It's a great way to get involved and to explore our community," said Howard.

Can't find a club that interests you? Why not start one of your very own? Some helpful steps to starting your own club would be to first go to the Office of Campus Life on the first floor in the student union, and pick up a new club charter packet. Complete all the forms in the packet with signatures and required information. Some stipulations that each club must have are, a minimum of five members all of whom which are SSU students. Each new club must have a faculty or club advisor, and established officers such as President, and Treasurer. One of these two officers must also attend one mandatory charter meeting. Each club must also establish a club account through the Associated Students, Inc, and last but not least create a constitution for your organization. It's very simple and as long as there is not already a club functioning with the same mission/vision as the club you want to start. OCL is available to help insure that students interested have all the information and resources available to start.

"SSU is a great place to get involved. Seek out the opportunities that are available to students. I promise, it will enhance your overall college experience," said Howard.

Why wait? Make the most of your college experience by getting involved in one of the many clubs offered.
