"Date Movie" stars Alyson Hannigan as the hopeless romantic Julia Jones. Jones often writes in her diary about her search for the right guy and her dreams for the future. Her dreams are often trampled by her parents, especially her father, played by Eddie Griffin. Both of Jones' parents wish her to marry someone of her ethnic background: a Greek, Indian, Japanese Jew.
Following the plot of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," Jones works in her family's Greek diner. While waiting on tables, she comes across a man and instantly, there is the clichéd slow motion connection. Insert strapping, young blonde with British accent. Of course, as soon as Jones turns around, her man is nowhere to be found. The hunt is on!
Jones enlists the help of relationship expert, Hitch. After taking one look at Jones, Hitch is a no go. After some convincing, though, Hitch agrees to help her, but not before he takes her to West Side Customs to "pimp her ride."
Her new look gets her on the popular dating show Extreme Bachelor: Desperate Edition. And guess who she happens to meet there? That's right…strapping, young blonde British guy named Grant. Naturally, they fall in love and the wedding is on. One minor detail though: they have to meet the parents.
If it's not enough that Grant had to meet her parents, the Jones' go to meet Grant's folks: The Fonckyerdoders.
For better or worse, both sets of parents try to get along and as soon as they do, another wrench is thrown into the story. Grant asks his best friend Andy to be best man. Enter Grant's ex-girlfriend, the supermodel-esque Andy. With Andy still having feelings for Grant, she stops at nothing to stop her best friend's wedding. Sound familiar?
The hilarity ensues with blatant references to popular movies of our time. With a battle sequence mocking "Kill Bill" to the Latina wedding planner with huge assets, "Date Movie" makes fun of absolutely everything.
For a few laughs and poking fun at popular culture, "Date Movie" is just for you.
Written by the same writers as "Scary Movie" trilogy. "Date Movie" contains the same in-your-face, turn away if you're squeamish, slapstick comedy.
If you enjoy witty, more cerebral humor, do NOT go see this film. Sure, you get a couple of laughs here and there, but don't expect the movie to win any Academy Awards.
"Date Movie" is pure midless humor. However, if you want a real date movie, go see something else.
