Letter to the Editor
Issue date: 3/15/06 Section: Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I am responding to Mark Lanza's article "Why you should care and how to get involved". Every week I pick up the Star in an effort to keep informed about what is happening on campus.
I too am frustrated at the number of events and goings that are missed not just by others but myself as well. There are lectures, presentations, gallery openings, exhibitions and more that seem to get announced in whispers rather than shouts. Come to think of it a town crier might be a good idea, or maybe we could get a sandwich board guy to walk around campus. No, it would need to be a town crier; most people are too busy on the phone to notice what is right in front of them.
Here are some obvious and not so obvious things I'll be a lot of people don't know:
Did you know the Student Health Center has a pharmacy where you can walk in and purchase over the counter products such as cough medicine, chap stick, feminine products, throat lozenges and allergy medicine just to name a few? Oh and while you are there you can see a doctor, for everything from that horrible cough so many of you seem to have right now to weight loss to annual physicals, yep everything.
Did you know that the Art Gallery (the one over in the Art Building) has a fabulous display of contemporary art from L.A? When they have an opening you can actually meet some of the artists and partake of some tasty hors d'oeuvres? While there are non-alcoholic beverages that are complimentary there is usually a no-host wine bar as well. By the way if you make it over there, I love the piece by Sandeep, wish I had a wall big enough to accommodate it in my home.
Did you know the SSU Crew team, yep we've got one, is trying to raise money? At their website you find out how to rent-a-rower for that extra help you might need moving furniture, yard work, and general handy work.
Here is their website, www.students.sonoma.edu/clubs/crew/rentarower.html.
When I want to know what's going on nationally and locally I turn to The Press Democrat. Likewise when I want to know what's happening at SSU I turn the Star. Many articles in the Star are quite interesting, for instance the towing of cars from Wolf Den Plaza frankly I wondered how long it would take for store owners to say, "enough already, want free parking park on the street in the residential areas") but there a quite a few articles that are repeats of what can be found in the local paper. The articles on the Tour of California and Barry Bonds are perfect examples.
The article on the basketball team is on the last page, along with an article about our undefeated water polo team. KUDO's to all the athletes of SSU, you work hard at both your sport and classes, you rise at the ungodly hour of 0 dark thirty for practice then attend classes all day followed by the overwhelming amounts of reading and assignments we all have these days. To each of you I give my admiration and applause for determination and courage.
