Beginning next semester, Sonoma State is planning a multi-disciplinary, two-semester seminar and lecture program designed for first year students. Peer Mentors are in demand now!

The First Year Experience class (FYE) is an experimental program and will be held once a week with lectures lasting one hour, including  four hours of seminar.  "The seminars include discussion and advising to address a variety of topics that interconnect issues in temporary society with personal identity and student life," relayed Chuck Rhodes, Director of Student Development and Equity Retention.

The program helps students build a variety of skills including critical thinking, reading, writing and oral communication skills, information literacy and student development, while also serving as an introduction to academic disciplines. This program aids freshman students in understanding the General Education Program at SSU and satisfies GE categories A1 and A2 , further awarding 3 units of general elective credits for a total of 9 units.

Those interested will assist in the well being of first year students by role modeling, advising and providing peer contact or support during the academic year. Candidates include students who have completed the University 238 class and have served at least one year in a formal leadership position.  As a peer mentor for the new FYE Class, a one year commitment is required. Mentors must have an overall grade point average of 2.75 and will work six hours a week for $9.50 per hour.

"For the experienced student leader, this is an opportunity to continue to serve the University and well as develop additional valuable leadership skills. For a Peer Mentor, this experience will not only enhance one's resume but will provide invaluable in an future leadership opportunity," stated Rhodes.

Applications are available in the Residential Life Office in Chateau (next to University Police) and are due on March 22nd.  For questions about the program or position, contact Chuck Rhodes at chuck.rhodes@sonoma.edu or call (707) 664-4033.
