Sonoma County is famous for their wine tasting but what about the beer? Battle of the Brews 2006 will be at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds, Grace Pavilion, on Friday, March 31st. The event is presented by Santa Rosa Active 20-30 #50, and includes beer tasting from up to 30 Northern California microbreweries and food from up to 20 local restaurants.
The event will include a performance by the band, Wonderbread 5. Once considered a Jackson 5 tribute band, they now cover a wide variety of music from the 70's, 80's, 90's and more. Their song list includes everything from a number of disco favorites by K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Kool and the Gang, and Rick James, to songs by bands like Guns N' Roses and Sublime; to the rap songs of Snoop Dogg, Nelly, and the Beastie Boys. According to their band bio on their website, wonderbread5.com, "Make no mistake - this is not your parents cover band. This band is crazy, young and drunk on rock n' roll."
Battle of the Brews is put on by an organization called Active 20-30 #50. They are Santa Rosa's division of Active 20-30 International, which is a volunteer service that is dedicated to raising money and helping fund programs for disadvantaged children in their local communities.
The proceeds for this benefit goes to Sonoma County children at risk. What a concept- Rockin' out to Wonderbread 5, eating food and drinking beer, while the money spent is going toward the benefit of others. I wanted to know more about the event so, I contacted Evan Hershey; his title with the organization is Immediate Past President.
"This is the event that makes all of the wonderful activities that we do and the donations we provide possible. Without this event, it would be very difficult for us to do any of it. While most people who attend the Battle of the Brews think it is just a "beer bash", it is possibly the single largest fund raiser for disadvantaged children in Sonoma County," Hershey said.
Included in the list of local breweries that will be represented are Bear Republic, Lagunitas, and Third Street Aleworks; and San Francisco's Anchor Steam and Gordon Biersch. The doors open at 5:00p.m., with tasting starting at 5:30 going till 8:00p.m.; the music and dancing start at 6:30 and continue on till 10:00p.m. The tickets cost $40 and must be purchased in advance; the event sells out every year, so they are not available at the door. Included in the cost you will receive a commemorative cup, beer, food, and a live concert plus unlimited dancing. Tickets may be purchased at Third Street Aleworks, Traverso's Deli, Tex Wasabi's, and Wally's Liquor, as well as others.
"This is the 10th year we have had this event as our fund raiser and $0.98 of every $1.00 we raise goes to fund programs
