Why Graduate Education Matters More Than Ever

The long-awaited Graduate Student Research Showcase takes place today, March 29.

From 4-7 p.m. in the Cooperage, SSU master's degree candidates and recent master's degree graduates will present their research projects. Provost Eduardo Ochoa, whose Office within the Division of Academic Affairs has supported this program, will give the welcoming remarks.

Why is this showcase so important?

For the first time in one event, we will highlight SSU's outstanding master's degree students and quality programs. This gives our master's degree students experience in presenting research in scholarly conference format, provide a forum for newer graduate students to see what kind of work is required of master's degree candidates, and to show undergraduates the range and diversity of programs available to them after they complete their bachelor's degrees.

But there are larger issues at stake, too.

If you visit the event you will find posters sessions and papers presented from a wide range of topics - from facilitating change in nursing to an innovative e-commerce site design to eating disorder prevention in a private high school. There is research on glucose metabolism in Northern elephant seals and a look into the impact of canine visits on patients in hospitals.

At the heart of these presentations are efforts from a wide range of disciplines - SSU has 14 graduate programs - to preserve and enhance the quality of life. The concentrated, in-depth study, which characterizes graduate education develops trained individuals for addressing and solving society's needs.

Research, scholarship, and creative activity are essential parts of the university's mission. It is through the encouragement and support of these activities that the institution contributes to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and the preparation of professionals. This activity benefits not only the citizens of the state and the region, but can have far-reaching consequences for citizens of the nation and the world.
