Winters in the North Bay don't exactly warrant snowsuits and thermal underwear, but it can become quite chilly. Here are some tips for dressing warm and looking hot.

Soft sweaters and worn-in jeans make getting out of bed in the morning a little less painful. Layer a cute scarf around your neck to keep you warm-bonus points if you knit it yourself.

Please skip on the matching velour sweat suits. The trend was made popular by the LA brand Juicy Couture over five years ago. It didn't look good then, and it doesn't look good now.

Knee-high boots are the in-thing this winter. They come in a variety of colors, textures and heights. Whether you prefer stiletto heels, thick heels or no heels-knee high boots are a must-have accessory for the season.

Speaking of trends, mini-skirts and bare legs are not practical winter wear.

"I hate when girls layer a long sleeve shirt, sweater and jacket then wear a skirt or shorts on bottom," said freshman Jennifer Webb.

Goosebumps are not attractive; at least put on a pair of thick tights or leggings to keep your legs warm.

Rubber rain boots are a good investment for the rainy winters. They are especially good for wading through puddles on the way to class. Wearing rain boots can make you feel like a little kid again.

The key to dressing warm is being comfortable.

"I love wearing big sweatshirts and a scarf," said freshman April Webb.

"My favorite thing about winter is wearing warm clothes."

Other options for keeping warm on top include peacoats and toggle coats. Both of these styles are cute and look great with jeans or a mini-skirt and boots. Purchasing a coat in black or navy is the most practical, but bright colors stand out and add some color to a bleak, winter day.

Don't forget to top off your outfit with a beanie. I like the ones with pom-poms on top. Wearing a beanie makes me want to go outside and build a snowman. I guess that will have to wait until I make a trip up to Lake Tahoe.

Shopping for winter clothes is fun, but can get pricey. Fortunately, less-expensive stores like Target make shopping excursions easier on the wallet. Unless of course, you are like me and buy everything you think is cute because it all seems affordable.

No matter what you wear this winter, a mug of hot cocoa is the best way to keep warm. So, cozy up to someone special and share a mug.
