The SSU women's soccer team's season came to an end Friday, Oct. 27 with a heartbreaking defeat to Chico State.

The team fell short of their conference tourney championship hopes and possible NCAA Western Regional hopes with the loss. The Seawolves fought valiantly with the Wildcats, but only a single second-half goal by Chico State gave them the victory and a berth into the CCAA championship.

The Seawolves completed a very impressive season with an overall record of 12-6-3, 10-4-3 CCAA. With 10 conference victories, it gives them their most since 1999, when they matched that total.

The team was left out of the necessary top-four ranking, diminishing any hopes of an at-large berth in the Western Regional NCAA Tournament.

Six members of the team were named All-Conference performers, led by first-team All-CCAA senior Megan Catton and sophomore Brooke Peterson. Seniors Emily Thompson and Khrya Buchanan were both named to the second team, while freshman Tracy Webster and sophomore Carissa Amiral received honorable mentions.

In another thrilling but heartbreaking defeat, the men's soccer team was ousted by Cal State Dominguez Hills in an upset.

It took a double-overtime goal by the Toros to clinch the 2-1 victory over SSU. The team will apprehensively sit and wait to find out if they will be chosen for the Western Conference NCAA Tournament. Only the top four teams from the West will be chosen, all by a committee decision.

Heading into the tournament, the team was ranked No. 16 nationally and No. 2 in the West. With a 13-2-1 conference record, the team's chances seem high, even after the early exit in the CCAA playoffs.

SSU sophomore forward Andrew Bailey was named CCAA Player of the Year after a brilliant season, leading the team with 12 goals. Not to be outdone, coach Marcus Ziemer was named Coach of the Year this season for the fifth time in his career, his first since the National Championship season in 2002.

Other All-CCAA performers include Brett Cook (first team), Nathan Medina, Mike Travis and Eric Larson (second team). Defenders Doug Carr and Stuart Gallant were named as honorable mentions.

The last time the team lost in the conference tournament, but was named to the NCAA Western Regional Tournament, they won the National Championship.
