San Diego is my hometown, where I was born and raised in the sun and sand. I take pride knowing that my home is the "finest city in America," and in the California fight I defend SoCal viciously. That is not to say I do not see anything good with NorCal. At least you guys have seasons; we only have one.

Upon my arrival to Sonoma State, I invested more in jeans and winter jackets than textbooks and school supplies, meticulously preparing for constant rainy weather and a chill factor I rarely come in contact with. I was excited to buy shoes instead of sandals, pants instead of shorts, and long sleeves instead of tanks. Having the freedom to constantly modify my wardrobe with the changing seasons is something San Diego weather does not cater to. I was used to hot Aprils into scalding Augusts into mild Januarys, but here I've experienced a new array of temperatures, from hot Augusts to chilling Novembers to freezing Februarys to sunny Marchs.

It is not hard to see that I am an autumn person. I like the fresh smell of nature, the crisp winds, the wardrobe preparation before winter, and the soothing colors of the great outdoors.

At SSU, as I walk to class, leaves fall before me, transforming the rigid worry lines into a smile and lightening my mood. There is a difference here. I can physically see the change from summer to fall and appreciate the miraculous conversion that is happening, instead of waking up one morning to wet concrete.

I also love the rain. I love the smell after the storm and the beautiful scenery it enhances. I argue against those people who believe rain to be constantly depressing, for it does not have to damper the rest of the day or month. It is refreshing and clears my mind, which is nice during finals week. Autumn is like a hot shower, only cold; washing away all the stress and exuding this feeling of a renewed start.

Plus, naps are easier to take when one is bundled in warm blankets and can hear the rain falling outside. I love naps. Whoever made naps mandatory in preschool is a genius and should create a Napping 101 course in college; but of course, only during the rainy season.

Those Thanksgiving dinners of turkey and full courses sure make it much easier to lie down for a number of hours, for one cannot stand too comfortably when stuffed with delicious food for the third night in a row.

There is football to watch on television, holidays to decorate for and celebrate, presents to buy, the fall semester heading into its final stages, family get-togethers and the anticipation of a new year ahead. The hot, sweaty weather and expensive electric bills are over and give way to that perfect mild day and the slightly chilly nights that are optimal for stargazing.

I think more people need to answer the question, "What is your favorite season?" with a better response: autumn.
