Thirty-nine percent shooting, in most collegiate and professional basketball contests, simply does not get the job done. Last Friday was a perfect example.

Despite draining a barrage of three-pointers, the SSU women lost 66-59 on Feb. 9 at No. 18 UC San Diego, as their Triton counterparts shot 54 percent as a team. The win for the Tritons boosted their overall record to a stunning 17-3, 13-2 in the CCAA, and earned them a 2-0 season sweep of SSU, with the first victory, a 76-70 overtime decision, coming on Jan. 6 at Seawolf Gym.

Guard Danae Wellander led the way for SSU with 16 points, while Lauren Redfield and Chelsey Armacost contributed 15 and 14, respectively. Redfield scored all 15 of her points from three-point range.

The next night, at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the SSU women found themselves down nine points within the first eight minutes. But they would resiliently battle back and hold on for a 63-59 triumph Saturday night, Feb. 10, in Carson, as Wellander (18 points) and Armacost (12 points) each scored in double figures. Redfield, once again, provided solid support, pulling down a team-high six rebounds.

The victory returns the SSU women to .500, with an overall record of 10-10, 9-7 in CCAA play. They return to the Bay Area to play the San Francisco State Gators on Thursday evening, Feb. 15, as they look to begin another winning streak.
