With March Madness right around the corner, tournament fever is beginning to spread. While SSU students won't be knocking down any buzzer beaters in the Sweet Sixteen, they have the opportunity to join in on some tournament fun of their own.
On Friday March 7, SSU Intramurals will present the first round of a singles ping-pong tournament that will be held in Mount Everest Gym. With only a five-dollar entry fee, contestants have a chance to win a multitude of prizes including an iPod Shuffle.
Rec Center Student Coordinators Andrew Reddish and Jack Gray are the organizers of the tournament and have already signed up over 20 participants.
"We wanted to put together something that's fun and easy," said Reddish. "We know it's a likable sport that appeals to a lot of people."
For those SSU students who find some fun competition lacking in their lives, the ping-pong tournament offers the perfect atmosphere. Each contestant is guaranteed at least six games that will be played to 21 points.
Waiting to play in your game will be no problem as the Kinesiology department has donated two ping-pong tables, giving the tournament a total of four tables. The top five finishers will all receive prizes, with the contestants getting a chance to pick the prize of their choice according to the order in which they finish.
As previously mentioned, the iPod Shuffle is expected to be the most sought after prize, with other rewards including a 30-minute massage, ping-pong accessories, an In-Motion five class punch card and an intramural season pass.
The tournament is two rounds, with the second and final round being held the following Fri. March 14 in the main lobby of the Rec Center. For those who have watched or participated in intramural sports, you know that often times these games get a bit more competitive than the intramural sports gods had intended. This tournament looks to give a more laid back approach at competition with plenty of fun to be had along the way.
