On Friday, March 14 the Office of Residential Life and Associated Students Productions will host SSU's first Day of Spirituality. This all-day event, held in the Student Union, includes a spirituality resource fair, a student spirituality panel, and a screening of the film, "10 Questions for the Dalai Lama."
Both the Vineyard, located in Zinfandel Village, and the Carneros Room in Cabernet Village will be open for silent meditation and prayer as part of the event.
"Spirituality was a Residential Life initiative. It is a way for students from all different faiths and backgrounds to talk about how faith effects their life," said Residential Life coordinator Heather French.
Spirituality Day begins with the spirituality resource fair taking place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Multi Purpose Room.
Faith based organizations, churches, and meditation centers from throughout the community will be setting up tables of information. Representatives from the Center for Spiritual Living, Tayu Meditation Center, Gateway Christian Center, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Santa Rosa will all be present.
On campus spiritual clubs that will be in attendance include InterVarsity Christian Fellowship whose goal is to help students grow in their relationships with Jesus, the Newman Catholic Center that unites Catholic college students, the Alive and Awake club that embraces personal exploration, and LaFe Latino Fellowship, which allows Latino college students to explore their background and faith.
At 1p.m. the student spirituality panel portion of Spirituality Day begins. Sociology Professor Andy Roth will be moderating a student led discussion on religion to enhance the knowledge students have about beliefs that differ from their own. It is also a forum for students to share how their faith has been part of their life as a college student.
Following the spirituality panel there will be a screening of the award winning film, "10 Questions for the Dalai Lama" at 3 p.m. in the Student Union's Erin Fisher room. The 85-minute documentary tells the story of the life of the great spiritual leader and includes footage of him answering fundamental questions. After the viewing a discussion of the film will be facilitated by Hutchins Professor Margaret Anderson.
Residential Life's Day of Spirituality is an event that purposefully creates a non-discriminatory safe environment for the discussion of religion.
Members of all faiths, denominations, and spiritual practices can gather and gain knowledge by learning from each other.
"Our goal is to raise awareness and get people talking. If we impact a handful of students then this event is worth having," said French.
