In Response to "Socially Unacceptable"
Issue date: 4/8/08 Section: Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
[In reference to "Socially Unacceptable", March 4]: Mr. Troxell--I am glad to hear that you have made a conscious decision to break the "social rule" regarding alcoholic beverages. I too occasionally enjoy what may be considered a girly drink and I see no shame in it. However, as a home brewer and general beer enthusiast, I was disappointed to read your thoughts on beer.
Judging by the fact that you buy Smirnoff Ice because it is "cheap, tastes like 7-Up, and can give [you] a buzz," I fear that your experience with beer probably started off on the wrong foot. When buying beer with value in mind, quality tends to take a back seat, and I will be the first to admit that most cheap beer does indeed taste and smell awful. I urge you, the next time you are looking to spend your money to imbibe, skip the Smirnoff and any beer that comes in anything larger than a twelve pack and spend the extra money on something good that you would not have tried before.
Some suggestions; anything sold by Stone Brewing Company, Anchor Brewing Company's Liberty Ale, Pyramid's Hefeweizen, or to keep it local; Lagunitas' Hairy Eyeball. Better yet, visit a place like Ale Works or the Russian River brewery that make wonderful beers that can't be bought in stores.
I hope in my beer-loving heart that you will find something that you enjoy and give beer a second chance. If you don't, I won't be offended, nor will I judge you for drinking fortified 7-UP.
