Election season is upon us, and it's in full steam ahead.

ASI candidates who are running for elected positions for 2008-2009 began their campaigning last Tue., April 1 and will be participating in debates this week.

The debate on April 7 will take place in Zinfandel Cafeteria at 6 p.m. with free ice cream, and on April 8 the debate will be in Stevenson Quad at 12 p.m. with another assortment of free refreshments.

The STAR recently interviewed the candidates with questions about their priorities, strengths and interests in running for office.

When each candidate was approached on what they would do differently from last year's officer, Derek Pierre, running for ASI President, responded, "I think it's very important to be visible to the student body and to see what students really want. A lot of people don't know what ASI is or who current officers are, and it's a little sad because ASI makes so many decisions that affect the students and the university. So I think it's important to be out there and present among the students."

Candidate for Senator of Social Sciences Greg Grenier stated, "I think all of the officers did a great job last year. The situations that they dealt with are going to be different than this year's officers; there will be new situations and new problems arising. What I plan to do differently is going to students individually and finding out what matters to them - otherwise, there is no point to ASI since they are the representatives of the students. I waant to support ideas for the student body by venturing out and asking everyone - in classes, walking around on campus - what is important to them."

VP of Finance candidate Nick Jones said that, "Tristan Kelley served as VP of Finance last year. I felt he did a good job [and] do not look to change too much from his foundation. Instead, I would like to extend the goals set forth by this year's VP. I'd like to fund more clubs, more events and help organize aa connection between organizations with similar goals."
