Members of the Greek community came together Saturday, April 26 for a day of fun in the sun to fundraise for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Hosted by the SSU Alpha-Alpha chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE)--a fraternity with nearly sixty active members--the second annual SAE Recess successfully raised more than $1000 for multiple sclerosis.
"SAE Recess was a blast," said Eric Kenner, Eminent Deputy Archon of the fraternity. "The sun was out in full force. It was a great way to bring the Greek community together."
And the sun was, indeed, out in force, as temperatures climbed to the mid-80's--a rare and celebrated occasion at Sonoma State.
Members of five campus sororities--Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta Zeta, Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Gamma Delta and Alpha Delta Pi--participated as teams in events ranging from kickball and dodgeball, to goldfish races and tug-of-war.
SAE Philanthropy Chair and event coordinator, Tyler Woolsey, reflected that, while the goldfish race was the most "out-there" event, the real attraction was a 1000-square foot, inflatable obstacle course called the "Adrenaline Rush".
The inflatable course challenged participants by having to squeeze, crawl, jump, rock-climb and slide their way through the giant maze, while competing for points.
"The "Adrenaline Rush" relays were definitely the most entertaining," said Kenner.
However, the consensus among the victorious women of Alpha Xi Delta was that the tug-of-war competition was the highlight of the event.
"We put all our strength and effort into it, and our girls have a lot of battle wounds from it," said Alpha Xi Delta member Jennifer Jensen.
The girls clenched their lead and the trophy in a championship, tug-of-war round against Alpha Delta Pi, with Alpha Gamma Delta taking a close third place.
'The most enjoyable part of being in SAE Recess was having our whole sorority come together as a team," said Allison Long of Alpha Xi Delta. "We weren't so focused on winning, but having fun."
