The subsequent protest by advocates of the California State Universities (CSU) has heated up, and has begun to spread all across the state. In the past three weeks SSU has fulfilled its fair share by participating in events led by the Alliance For the CSU (AFC) and the California State Student Association (CSSA).
All facets of the SSU community sent hundreds of phone calls and faxes on April 14, in an attempt to combat the looming 2008-2009 proposed budget cuts. The event was coordinated by Alliance For the CSU (AFC), and will occur in some aspect at all 23 CSU campuses.
"We have had the entire campus community, every aspect of the community, every person and type has showed up to work with us," said Andy Merrifield, Chapter President for Faculty Association of SSU, and Assistant Vice President for Northern CSU.
The event's purpose was to bombard Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office with phone calls and faxes. In addition to hundreds of phone calls, approximately 700 faxes were sent, of which 70 percent were sent by students.
As anticipated, through this process Schwarzenegger never actually picked up the phone.
According to an e-mail sent by Jean Wasp, SSU Media Relations Coordinator, the messages were to say, "I support the California State University and you should too! Restore the cuts to the CSU in the May Revise."
The event did not limit their activities to calls and faxes. Fliers were being handed out, encouraging supporters to participate in ten different ways of combat the approaching CSU budget cuts.
Among these protests were spreading information to friends and co-workers, writing letters to newspaper editors, posting signs of support in windows, and attending the different CSU events.
"Today's event is an opportunity for the students at SSU to fax the governor with the simple request that he restores the cut, he puts the money back," said Merrifield. "If [Schwarzenegger] cuts the CSU he harms the economy of California, since we are the economic engine."
