Another Associated Student, Inc. (ASI) election has come and gone. Now with the votes received, tallied and results released, SSU has a clear picture of who will control the immediate ASI future.
The election took place on April 15 and 16, and determined which ASI officers would take office for the 2008-2009 school year.
The position of Presidency went to Derek Pierre, who won with the support of 62.4 percent of the votes.
"It feels very good [to win]," said Pierre. "I get a chance to really stand tall, and help as many students as possible."
This year there was a significant increase in the students who participated in voting. Approximately 1,200 students cast ballots, which is nearly an eighth of the total enrolled population.
Jonathan T. White was runner up to Pierre, receiving 37.6 percent of the votes.
"I am… better off for having run and lost than not having run at all," said White. "It gave me the opportunity to take time away from my daily routine and connect with students and instructors I would otherwise not have met."
"The student body at [SSU] deserves to have the choice of two highly qualified candidates. I hope to see a competitive election for the ASI presidency every year," added White.
Another member involved in the SSU race rally on Monday, April 14 was candidate for Vice President of Finance, Nick Jones. In the end Jones gained 43.2 percent of votes, not enough to win over Nicolette Margi's 51.8 percent.
"You learn a lot about your self as a candidate and person, as well as learning a lot about the other candidates, and that's always an enjoyable process," said Margi, referring to her campaign process.
Tristan Kelley ran unopposed for Executive Vice President, and won with 91 percent of votes.
Michael Duncan won Senator for Science and Technology with 94 percent of votes.
Greg Grenier won Senator for Social Sciences with 53 percent, against Janisha Moore's 47 percent.
