The men's baseball team took two out of four games from UCSD, the number one team in the region, in a weekend series in La Jolla April 18-20.

The Seawolves lost the first game of the series 7-4. The Seawolves struck Saturday's doubleheader with a decisive 13-2 victory and a 9-6 win in the second game. The Seawolves then lost the final deciding game 3-2 as the Tritons used a bottom of the ninth inning rally to defeat the Seawolves.

"They were definitely a tough team," said senior catcher Konrad Thieme. "Our team showed a lot of character. Every game was a battle. It was a great weekend for baseball. I'm sure we'll see them again."

Thieme stepped up big for the Seawolves during the UCSD series hitting .533 with three home runs and six RBI. Thieme's offensive firepower carried the Seawolves throughout the series. Thieme's hitting in the series earned him CCAA player of the week honors.

"He (Thieme) played well all weekend," said head coach John Goelz. "Unbelievable, phenomenal week. They couldn't get him out. He played well behind the plate too."

While the Seawolves wished that they could have swept the Tritons, they will take what they can get from such a difficult opponent. "We would have liked to have won four games, but we split," said Goelz. "There's a lot of positives, we didn't lose any ground. It could have been worse."

The Seawolves entered the series against UCSD in first place in the CCAA, and number two in the nation, yet they were also ranked number two in the Far West Region surprisingly behind UCSD despite their inferior overall and conference record. SSU, however, has not let the ranking get to them.

"I don't give a damn," said Goelz. "It's a lot of politics. How can we be ranked two in the nation and two in the region? After going 50-12 last season, the pre-season coaches poll ranked us third in the CCAA. What we do on the field speaks volumes. All that matters is if we're in the top six in the region to end the year." The top six teams from each region qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
