It was Sonoma State's first appearance this year at Red Bull Snow Warz, and will definitely not be their last. On April 12, over 40 teams from California, Arizona, Washington, Nevada, Oregon and Montana assembled at Northstar in Tahoe to experience an amazing weekend on the slopes.
Snow Warz is the largest collegiate ski and snowboarding competition of skill judged by professional park judges on a totally custom setup. With Sonoma's finest on hand, SSU made a big impression.
Marcus Sarale, Barrington "Bear" Burke, Steven Frietas and Rachel Abramson thought they knew what was in store for them, but came out of this competition with a whole new game face.
Red Bull not only provided them with free lift tickets and jerseys, they hooked them up with nice condos for their weekend stay.
Sonoma was the life of the party and our people were definitely the first to arrive and last to crash! When asked what his highlight of the weekend, Bear Burke replied, "It was a great social scene to meet new people from Sonoma and other schools in the West."
Competition was tough, with teams who really knew how to tear it up (as you can see in their Facebook and YouTube albums.) Stakes were high as brand new custom Red Bull snowboards, skis, trophies, jackets, pants, and gear were given out as rewards to top contenders in categories such as best trick, best individual performance and best team performance.
SSU's own Rachel Abramson finished in 1st place in the Women's Individual Snowboarding division and received a brand new K2 park board, a one of a kind Snow Warz trophy and a whole lot of hype. No one knew Sonoma State had skills before this weekend, but after their performance, SSU is finally getting recognized.
After the awards ceremony and a special performance by rock group Dirty Penny, everyone made their way back to the condos to get pumped up for the final night of outrageous parties with the West's snowboarding and skiing elite.
Sarale, Burke and Abramson are the only ones who can fully explain the excitement and craziness of Red Bull Snow Warz.
"I'd never been to a Red Bull event before," said Abramson. "There was so much energy and it was so much fun."
