Tea Party Republican Assemblywoman launches attack on Senator Leland Yee

On October 24, 2011

Tea Party Republican Assemblywoman Kristen Olsen (R- Modesto) launched a hypocritical and dishonest attack on Senator Leland Yee, challenging his commitment to open-government and transparency.

In her factually incorrect robocall to voters in San Francisco, Olsen claims Senator Yee won't release his Senate office budget, despite Yee's office budget having been publicly available and released on numerous occasions.

Olsen's action is highlighted by the fact she was the public relations director for California State University, Stanislaus when the university came under criticism by Yee and others for refusing to release the speaking contract of Sarah Palin last year, and as a result lost a public records lawsuit filed by Californians Aware.

Yee has a long record of fighting for transparency in government and for organizations that act as quasi-governmental organizations, like the CSU foundation that hired Palin to speak.

Yee has authored dozens of laws to protect whistleblowers and allow greater public access to government documents, increasing the accountability of public officials.

Consequently, Yee has won multiple awards for his legislative action on transparency and open government, including being named as CFA's Legislator of the Year for his work on SB 8, signed into law by Governor Brown, which will make higher education foundations and auxiliaries subject to the Public Records Act.

Tellingly, Olsen hasn't even written or sponsored one bill promoting the same. So in recognition, CFA is awarding Kristen Olsen the first annual Golden Shredder Award for her history of secrecy, hypocrisy and lack of dedication to open and transparent government.
