The Seawolves demonstrated their strong defense when they took to the road to play UC San Diego and CSU San Bernardino this past weekend. The Seawolves split the two games losing to the undefeated UC San Diego Tritons and beating San Bernardino. The two games bring Sonoma State's overall record to 6-10 and a CCAA record of 4-8.
SSU's women's basketball traveled to La Jolla to play the undefeated UCSD Tritons on Friday. The Seawolves lost 57-73 to drop their CCAA record 3-8. The win gave the Tritons their 17th straight and our 12-0 in conference.
The Seawolves took and held the lead during the first minute of the game with a layup from Senior Jaclyn Bisordi. UCSD shot their first points on two free throws, but SSU kept on the gas until they were ahead by six at 18-12, the biggest lead they would hold the entire game and the last lead. Even though the Tritons overpassed SSU in the first half, the Seawolves defense managed to get 46.7 percent of their shots and hold UCSD down at 34.3.
Still, the Seawolves couldn't come back against UCSD. SSU's shooting percentage dropped down to 29.6 during the second half and they only managed to score 26 more points over the top-ranked Tritons. UCSD's Daisy Feder had the top score of the night out of both teams, scoring 23 total points and went nine of 12 from the line.
SSU's point leader was Bisordi, who had 15 points off of six baskets.
After their defeat in San Diego, the Seawolves traveled again on Saturday to play CSU San Bernardino, where they won 54-46 against the Coyotes. SSU's defense kept the Coyotes at bay, limiting their shooting percentage to only 26.5 overall while the Seawolves kept theirs up 44.7 percent.
Bisordi was once again the top scorer for SSU with 12 points, followed by junior Tori Carroll with 10 points from the floor.
Senior Aly Conway was the Seawolf who broke onto the scored board first with the first four points of the game, two free throws and a layup.
SSU held the lead the whole first half and most of the second until the Coyotes tied with a shot from Jaslyn Cosey to make the score 30-30. It was a fight to take the lead as the teams tied twice more and switched off the lead.
After tying again at 40-40, SSU managed to keep the lead the rest of the night, despite a close call when their lead dropped to a mere two-point difference. At the end of the night with 37 seconds left, SSU grabbed their biggest lead of eight points to keep the score at 54-46.
The Seawolves will be traveling again next weekend to play Chico State on Friday, tipoff at 5:30 P.M.
